Swelling occurs after liposuction during the healing process. There will always be some swelling after surgery, but taking the right steps will greatly reduce the amount of swelling and discomfort you will have. Here are the following things you should do to help reduce your swelling after surgery.

1. Wear compression garments. A compression garment is a very tight-fitting cloth that fits around the healing area. The garment holds your fresh wounds in place and reduces the swelling of the surrounding areas. The constant pressure from the compression garments heals your skin in a more even matter. Compression garments can be very uncomfortable, but it is essential that you wear them for the length of time that your doctor prescribed. This is one of the most efficient ways to reduce swelling after liposuction.

2. Most likely your doctor has prescribed you pain medication to help during your healing process. In addition, the medication prescribed to you will most likely also contain an anti-inflammatory to reduce swelling. Arnica Montana, a homeopathic remedy, can also be taken to reduce inflammation and speed local healing.

3. Lymphatic drainage massage therapy will speed up the process of draining lymphatic fluids from the bruising that occurs during the healing process, which in turn greatly reduces swelling. You can attend a massage session two to three times a week for the first 2 weeks, and then continue once per week until your healing is complete.

4. Follow the list of “Do Nots.” There are a few things you should not do while you are healing from liposuction. Unlike normal injuries or average surgeries, do not apply ice or heating products to liposuctioned areas. Also, do not don’t soak in a bath or pool.

5. Maintain a healthy diet. It is important to drink a lot of water and stay hydrated during your healing process. Healing from liposuction takes a lot out of your body and you can easily become dehydrated, which would cause swelling. Make sure to eat healthy meals three times a day and try not to snack on processed foods. Keeping your body healthy and hydrated is key to maintain a healthy immune system while healing.

These are some tips, but it is always important to follow your Doctor’s instructions.

My name is Erika and I’m a 16 year old in high school in north Palm Beach County. My breast size is 36DD and I’m having some problems. Sorry for the delay in the response, but you do have a very valid concern. It can be very uncomfortable and difficult having large breasts on a small frame. Patients will describe problems with activities and finding clothes that fit correctly. It makes it even more difficult when you experience this problem at a younger age. With the advances in procedures, there are more options, with smaller and possibly no scarring, to treat your problem. Although 16 is on the younger side, it is not too young to explore the options with a consultation to see if it is the right thing for you to do now, or to wait for a future time.

Breast implants themselves have a life guarantee.  Generally, when women have breast augmentation at a young age(20-50), they may desire further breast surgery to maintain the youthful appearance, and that’s why you hear of so many cases of women that replace or exchange their implants. It is not necessary, however to replace or exchange them unless a complication arises such as a capsular contracture or deflation.

Great question and actually a very common problem. Some of the time laser treatments and/or ultrasound treatments may improve the scar.  If it is more severe, the scar can be released and possibly excised.  There are also various scar creams that may improve the appearance. All of these treatments do not require enlarging the scar.
